Khan Bahadur Maulvi Syed Zainul Abidin (14th June 1832 – 27th Sep 1905) was the closest companion of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. He was born in Machli Shahar, Jaunpur, to a Syed family of Syed Muhammad Hussain. His mother was a distant relative of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. After completing his primary education in his hometown, he joined Sanskrit College Benaras and graduated in Arabic. After graduation, he joined the University of Calcutta and completed his Law degree with the first division. He joined judicial services and retired as a Sub-Judge from Ghazipur, UP. When Sir Syed founded the Scientific Society in Ghazipur, Maulvi Zainul Abidin was posted there, and he wholeheartedly supported Sir Syed’s vision and mission. He moved to Aligarh and bought a house, which is remembered as Taar Walaa Bangla. He donated the Bangla to MAO College in 1897. He supported Sir Syed at all times, especially when Sir Syed was in trouble due to financial mismanagement by the College’s treasurer. Syed Zainul Abidin sold his ancestral properties of Machli-Shahar, Jaunpur, and part of the money was donated to College Funds. During the final moments of Sir Syed, he spent a lot of his time with Sir Syed. Maulvi Syed Zainul Abideen was buried close to Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in the University Jama Masjid. His wife is buried close to Parsa Begum in Shauqat Bagh, Moradabad.
